Help Shape the Experience

There are plenty of tasks to prepare for a burial that need people with various skills and interests. Not a digger? No problem. Along with helping with set up and take down, our job is to assist the family in any way they need in the moment, even if that is simply bearing witness. Being on the call list when burials are scheduled means that you can participate when and if it works for you, and how you feel best equipped to help. This is your chance to help create a healing experience for all.

Care of the Grave

Digging the grave takes 2-3 people 3 or so hours.
Placing biomass on the grave bottom, and again on the top of the casket or shroud once lowered.
Placing and securing planks, rails, and ropes for safety.
Filling the grave in is usually initiated by the family, but they may appreciate help.
Completing the mound, relocating soil.

Creating the Space

Gathering biomass: pine branches, straw, pine needles, or other greens or flowers.

Setting up the tent.
Bringing in and arranging chairs or benches.
Setting up the table used for flowers, photographs, notebooks, tissues.
Putting out street signs.
Preparing the comfort station, water station, bug nets and spray, hand warmers, and other comfort measures.

Assisting the Family

Greeting professional helpers, funeral directors, clergy; guiding them as needed.
Greeting and guiding the family and other mourners.
Assisting anyone with mobility concerns or other needs.
Helping carry the casket or shrouding board as pallbearers if needed.
